May is Bike Month; see you at the Bike Rodeo on May 18 in Bedford

To the Editor:

May is Bike Month in New Hampshire and with the good weather you will be seeing more bicyclists out on the roads in town.

Please be alert for them as you drive and remember that there is a law (RSA 265-143a) that requires motorists traveling at 30 mph to stay three feet away from a bicyclist with an additional foot for every additional 10 mph (four feet away at 40 mph, etc.). Bicyclists have the same rights and duties as drivers of motor vehicles. With everyone doing his part, bicycling will be safer in Bedford.

Bedford is a beautiful town and I hope more people get out to experience the fun and satisfaction of getting exercise, going to the store or ice cream parlor or commuting to work by bicycle.

The Bedford Police Department as well as certified safe cycling instructors from the Bike-Walk Alliance of New Hampshire (www.bwanh.org) will be offering the Third Annual Bike Rodeo in the upper parking lot of Bedford High School on May 18 from 10 a.m. to noon.

This will be a great opportunity to bring children out to learn the rules of the road and have fun. I hope to see you there.

Share the road … and have fun.
