Silo’s Steakhouse closes after 15 years

MERRIMACK – Silo’s Steakhouse, a fixture on the north end of Daniel Webster Highway for more than a decade, shuttered earlier this month and is up for sale.

Owner Susanne Robbins said in an e-mail response to The Telegraph that she has “heartfelt gratitude for the wonderful patrons and employees who were such a meaningful part of my life over the past fifteen years. I will always view my experience of owning Silo’s as a tremendous gift.”

The restaurant’s home page shows a message signed by Robbins about closing “for the foreseeable future.”

Robbins declined comment on the reason for closing but Joe Shanley, the real-estate agent listing the property, said it was a “very personal decision” for her.

“She’s had a great deal of fun doing it, but as you know, running a restaurant business is a tremendous amount of work,” Shanley said in a phone interview Wednesday. “She’s exhausted from being a restaurateur. … She wants to do something else with her life.”

Robbins opened the steak house in 1994 with her husband, Dean Robbins.

The next year, they started giving area veterans free prime rib dinners on Veterans Day, a tradition that continued each year since. In 2008, they hosted 350 veterans from across the state, according to the restaurant Web site.

During the summer of 2001, Silo’s closed after Dean Robbins, who worked in restaurants his whole life, was in a serious motorcycle accident, according to Telegraph articles published at the time.

At the time, the couple considered closing for good and had interested buyers, but they decided to re-open in June 2002.

While the Robbinses ran the steak house for years together, Susanne Robbins took sole ownership in June 2008, according to town assessing records.

Shanley got the listing on Dec. 14 and has had one showing. He has three additional showings booked for next week.

The two-level, 140-seat steak house is priced at $575,000, which includes the building, equipment, furniture and fixtures. The 6,400 square-foot building sits on 1.25 acres.

Robbins said on the Web site she will immediately refund all gift certificates mailed to the restaurant at 641 Daniel Webster Highway, and deposits made on private parties.
