Are you moved to help?

The Milford United Methodist Youth Mission Team is working toward a lofty goal this year. The team wants to go to Houston to help with the clean-up from hurricane Harvey the week of June 24- June 30, 2018. Thanks to a group called Youth Work Camps they have a way to reach this goal and they are opening the opportunity to any capable youth 14 or over in the Milford area. The Milford United Methodist’s youth have participated in mission trips through the Group Work Camps Organization in the past and they have been happy with the experience

Founded in 1976 by Thom Schultz to meet a need after a flood did catastrophic damage to Colorado, Group Work Camps still brings the same passion to help teenagers from all different Christian denominations grow closer to Jesus by accepting a challenge to serve others in their own backyard or halfway around the world. In its 40 years, more than 450,000 mission trip participants have logged over 13 million volunteer hours to help people in need.

The MUMC youth have served in New York, Appalachia, and Pennsylvania to name just a few. All of these trips were more local and they were able to travel by car, bus or van. Although that was considered for this trip, the goal now is to try to build a larger group by opening the opportunity to more youth and to fly.

The need after this season of massive natural disasters is very high and many of us have wondered how we might make a difference. Here are three very real ways you might help.

1. Have you got a child or children 14 years or older that would like to help? Do you have a church youth group that wants to serve? Work can be anything from home repair, basic construction or painting. We invite you to consider joining the Milford United Methodist Church youth Mission team on this trip.

2. Mission trips are not inexpensive endeavors and getting a group of volunteers from New Hampshire to Texas adds exponentially to the cost. The cost for the average volunteer starts at $464. The cost for plane fare can be that much more. Some youth would love to help but cannot afford the cost and many local churches have had to tighten their belts in these times. Could you donate dollars? What about frequent flyer miles?

3. Depending on the number of youth we can interest in this opportunity, there could be room for other adult chaperones.

Interested? There will be an informational meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 10 at the Milford United Methodist Church, 327 North River Road, Milford.
