Society gives thanks

Last year, 2017, was a terrific year for the Milford Historical Society. With the help of many volunteers, and support from local businesses, we opened two new exhibitions. The response from our visitors has been very exciting. Our Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day Open Houses drew large crowds to view the military exhibition, and many visitors have taken a seat in the new portrait gallery to read biographies of prominent Milford citizens of the 19th century.

The correspondence from Milford’s WWII soldiers to Mrs. Wright’s League of Army and Navy has been read by many descendants of Milford’s soldiers and requests for copies of the letters have been fulfilled.

The meet and greet for Terry Lorden, founder of Playhouse 101 was well attended, thanks to the efforts of Bonnie Gondola, historian at the First Congregational Church, early home of the Playhouse. The Eye-Spy scavenger hunt during the Pumpkin Festival was a great success. Many of the young students playing the game impressed us with their knowledge of history and their determination to find and identify every object on the list.

As always, our dedicated volunteers make it all possible by their contributions of ideas, time, muscle, historical knowledge and willingness to help in any way possible. We are fortunate to have David Palance at our helm, working continually to update the Carey House Museum and always ready to lend a hand with a project.

The following local businesses have done so much for us by donating advice, transportation, time, goods and services, and by helping us sell our fundraising calendars:

• The Linen and Shade Bin

• The Frame Depot

• Kokko Builders

• Hometown Insurance

• The Garden Party

• J. M. Princewell

• The Wadleigh Library

• Union Coffee Company

• Consigning for Good

• Kimberly’s Creative Hair Design

• Hayward’s Trading Post

• The Toadstool Bookshop

A special thank you goes to Kathy Cleveland of the Milford Cabinet for the coverage she has written about our on-going renovations and events.

Thank you everyone for your support.
