Gun profits vs. lives

We all deserve to live in safe, thriving, and vibrant communities free of gun violence. Sadly, no one is safe these days. Gun violence is rampant.

Make no mistake, this is by design of the gun industry, which reaps huge profits from the murder and mayhem their products cause.

Usually if maimed or killed by unsafe products or practices, we would have legal recourse. But this principle does not apply to the gun industry because it has obtained unprecedented immunity from our longstanding system of accountability.

In 2005, a federal act made the gun industry immune from nearly all lawsuits, leaving families of gun violence victims without an avenue to seek justice. No other industry in the country benefits from such special legal protection.

In other industries, such as tobacco and prescription drugs, legal settlements have held corporations liable for the deaths they caused. Guns are the only consumer product in America not subject to any safety-related regulatory oversight. Gun industry immunity has eliminated the only existing check on their unscrupulous actions.

New Hampshire gives blanket immunity to the gun industry. State law provides that no civil liability action may be brought in any state court against a trade association, manufacturer, or seller of firearms or ammunition. Just this past February, a NH judge concluded this means ensuring that firearm manufacturers and sellers are not forced into bankruptcy through litigation.

It’s time to stop protecting corporate gun profits and start saving lives. Tell your elected officials to repeal gun industry immunity.
