Hollis Brookline High School Highlights

Emma Newton led the Hollis Brookline High School girls track team at the New England Regional Championship last weekend.

Newton, a senior, finished eighth in the girls 2-mile run, coming in in 11 minutes, 6.73 seconds.

She also ran a leg for the 4×800-meter relay team, which finished 17th. Also running the relay were Meghan Philpot, Lauren Cole and Sarah Cramton.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Feb. 28: HB 76, John Stark 30

The Cavaliers played outstanding on both sides of the ball on their senior night. On defense, HB was led by seniors Jason Van Coughnett and Conor O’Shea, while Shea Whalen carried HB on offense with 14 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Feb. 28: HB 43, John Stark 16

HB got out to an early lead and never looked up, cruising to a victory over John Stark. The Cavaliers had a 25-point lead heading into the half and focused on defense in the second and third.

Sydney Gillis led HB with 11 points. Gabby Pickard grabbed 10 rebounds in the victory.

March 4: No. 6 Coe-Brown 55, No. 11 HB 47

The Cavs trailed by as little as three points in the fourth quarter, but 24 points from Coe-Brown’s Abby Ahern was too much for Hollis Brookline to handle, as the team fell 55-47 in the first round of the Division II tournament.

Jenna Hyatt and Cassandra Stapelfeld both played well on offense for the Cavs, each scoring 10 points. Bri Hackett and Kristin Johnson combined to score an additional 14.

Cavalier coach Bob Murphy was proud of his team’s season. “I am proud of the way the girls played. It was a good season; I would have like to move on, but I am happy with the way we finished.”
