Brookline’s Guthrie among 4 to earn All-Academic honor
NASHUA – The Daniel Webster wrestling program, having recently completed its second varsity season, was recently honored by the New England Wresting Association (NEWA) as four Eagles earned NEWA Academic All-Association, two of which advanced to be recognized as Academic All American by the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA).
Moreover, with a team combined cumulative grade point average of 3.13, the program was recognized as a recipient of the NWCA Division III Scholar Team Awards, placing 27th overall national for team GPA. The team GPA is calculated as an average of the top 14 student-athletes on each team.
To earn a spot in the NEWA Academic team, a student-athlete must have been a major contributor to the team and maintained a 3.3 GPA or higher.
The four NEWA All-Academic Award winners include junior Seth Carter (Hudson), junior Devin Visconti (North Reading, Mass.), freshman Travis Guthrie (Brookline), and freshman Alex Kane (Wakefield, Mass).
Both Visconti and Carter were then honored as Scholar All-Americans by the NCWA, marking the first Academic All-American awards for the College’s athletics program.
"This is a remarkable achievement by these student-athletes," noted Eagles Head Coach John Archambeau. "The commitment and dedication these individuals have given to our wrestling program has clearly been equaled by their commitment to their academics. We are extremely proud of them."
Visconiti, who recently was named the first All-Regional performer by the NEWA as an honorable mention at the 174-pound class, posted an 18-8 overall record this past season which included three pins, four technical falls and two major decisions.
Carter, who performed at three classes with the bulk at 165, finished 23-5 overall, 18-3 at 165 which included nine pins, three technical falls and one major decision.
Kane, wrestling at 285, posted a 6-14 overall record, while Guthrie was 3-22 nearly splitting time between 174 and 184.
